The next generation of phone service is just over the horizon. 5G — or fifth generation — promises to be able to connect 100 times as many devices at 100 times faster speeds and usher in an era of new capabilities that were, until recently, science fiction. We have progressed along way with regards to technology, the first generation began in the 90’s and 2G quickly followed. 3G and 4G come into our lives around the late 00’s and in 2019 the UK is expecting the roll out of the 5G network. Due to the speed of development in the telecommunications industry, little research has been carried out on the potential health affects caused by these networks. Some believe that it’s not solely the speed of development that’s preventing the research but in fact it’s that the network companies do not want to know what physical or mental impact it has on the public because if its negative, it’ll cost these companies billions of pounds.

Let us take a look at what common questions are being asked about the installation of the fifth generation network.

Will 5G cause cancer?

Well firstly, 5G has already been linked with the following increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans as per the research carried out by the International EMF Scientist Appeal. Who are a group of 250+ scientists from around the world who studied the effects on humans of prolonged exposure to high emf.

Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plant and animal life, so the erection of these cell towers is not too welcome especially in areas such as Bristol and London as these are the guinea pig areas for the new 5G towers. See

Research on microwave frequency radiation conducted since 1996 shows that the existing 3G and 4G cellular systems are causing serious harm to human health.

The 5G systems will increase the level of harm to the level where illness and death can no longer be denied. We now know that aforementioned illnesses are linked to the cumulative effects of microwave radiation.

Cellular systems are pushing microwave radiation into our bodies and brains 24 hours a day regardless of whether we use a cell phone or even own one.

Millimeter waves (MMWs) do not travel well through buildings and they tend to be absorbed by rain and plants. This interferes with the signal. Added to this, high frequency waves like MMWs also have much shorter wavelengths that can’t travel far.

To counter this problem 5G will utilize smaller cell stations (and the technology of beamforming) that’ll scramble/unscramble and redirect packets of data on a no-interference path back to us. This could mean wireless antennas on every lamp post, utility pole, home and business throughout entire neighbourhoods, towns and cities. Baring in mind that the World Health Organization classified radio frequency radiation as a carcinogen.

Research on 5G hazards?

Much like the research on living near pylons, the electrical substation safety distance and the effects of living near pylons, there’s has not been an abundance of research carried out. However, the most comprehensive research was carried out by the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) and its member organizations in 27 countries and in April 2018 they adopted a declaration calling for a moratorium on the deployment of 5G (fifth generation cellular technology) in the European Union.

The declaration is entitled, “5G networks in European Countries: appeal for a standstill in the respect of the precautionary principle.”

“We believe it should be unethical to ignore the available evidence waiting a possible “a posteriori” demonstration of health damages in the presence of a present and potentially manageable risk for public health.

Thus, in the respect of the precautionary principle and of the WHO principle “health in all policies”, we believe suitable the request of a standstill for the “5G experimentations” throughout Europe until an adequate and active involvement of public institutions operating in the field of environmental health (health ministry, environmental ministry, national environmental and health agencies) will be effectively planned.”

Unfortunately, due to haste in which network providers wish to install the 5G antennas, no thought has been given to the health risks of 5G to the citizens who will be living near their antennas.

The Commission’s response contradicts the basic assertion of the declaration. The EC claims that current limits on electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure established by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) are adequate to protect the population, and that these limits apply to the frequencies to be deployed for 5G.

The limits were created to protect the public from brief encounters to low frequency EMF, however, the implementation of 5G antennas would see the public being exposed to prolonged periods of time to low frequency high emf.

Since the declaration was published, the world’s largest $25 million study, conducted by the National Toxicology Program in the US, shows statistically significant increases in the incidence of brain and heart cancer in animals exposed to mobile phone radiation at levels below international guidelines. This supports human studies on mobile phone radiation and brain tumour risk, as demonstrated in many scientific studies.

We believe the responsible course of action is to defer 5G deployment until the full biological and environmental effects are understood. To protect our health, more research must be undertaken. Additionally, there should always be an option to opt-out from 5G technology from devices like appliances and cars—ensuring the safety of those with electromagnetic-sensitivities, the elderly and the young. Unfortunately, since there isn’t an option to opt-out and due to the speed in which the companies wish to ‘roll out 5G’, there won’t be more research. Therefore, we suggest testing your home for emf and having an emf survey of your property carried out.
